Moving can feel overwhelming, but good preparation can make moving day faster, safer and less stressful. Whether you are packing yourself or asking Meticulous Movers to handle part or all of the packing, use these practical steps to keep belongings organized from the first box to the final unload.
Make a Master Moving List
Write everything down. Create a room-by-room list of what is moving, what is staying, what can be donated or removed and what needs special handling. Number boxes as they are packed and keep a simple inventory so you can locate important items quickly.
Have Plenty of Packing Supplies
Get more strong boxes than you think you will need, plus quality packing tape, clean packing paper, markers, labels, resealable bags and appropriate cushioning. Reinforce the bottom of each box. Wardrobe boxes are useful for clothing that should remain hanging and for other bulky lightweight items.
Pack Early and Organize by Room
Start with seasonal clothing, books, decorations and other items you will not need before moving day. Pack room by room and label boxes on more than one side. A color-coding system can make unloading easier by giving each room its own label or sticker color.
Keep Parts, Hardware and Cords Together
Place screws, bolts, brackets, remote controls, cords and other small parts in labeled resealable bags. When practical, keep the labeled bag with the item it belongs to. You can also maintain one clearly marked Parts & Hardware Box for furniture hardware, basic tools and cords needed during setup.
Photograph Electronics Before Disconnecting Them
Take a quick picture of television, computer, router and entertainment-system connections before unplugging cables. Label cords when necessary so reconnecting equipment at the new property is easier.
Pack Ahead and Reduce What Is Left Out
In the final days before the move, live with the essentials. Pack extra toiletries, extra cookware, decorative pieces, spare electronics and seasonal items. Use luggage and duffle bags for clothing, towels, sheets and other soft goods that are easy to recognize when you arrive.
Protect Fragile Items
- Place heavier items toward the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top.
- Use clean packing paper, towels or linens to prevent shifting and scratches.
- Wrap ceramic lids separately.
- Pack plates and record albums vertically rather than stacking them flat.
- Use extra cushioning for pictures, mirrors, artwork, glassware and electronics.
- Remove bulbs before packing lamps and protect lampshades in appropriately sized cartons.
- Wrap very small parts in bright tissue or place them in labeled bags so they are easy to find.
Secure Bottles and Appropriate Liquids
Make sure allowable household bottles are tightly closed before moving. Ask your mover before packing fuels, propane, paint thinner, chemicals or other hazardous materials because some items cannot be transported safely in a moving truck.
Create a First-Night Essentials Box
Keep medications, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, towels, basic bedding, pet supplies, snacks, paper towels and basic tools where you can reach them immediately. Do not bury these essentials in the moving truck.
Keep Important Papers and Valuables With You
Passports, birth certificates, Social Security cards, leases or closing papers, medication, jewelry, cash, keys and irreplaceable records should remain in your personal possession rather than inside an ordinary moving box.
Prepare Furniture and Measure Difficult Access
Measure oversized furniture along with doorways, hallways, staircases and elevators when fit may be tight. Tell Meticulous Movers in advance about pianos, safes, copy machines, artwork, oversized furniture and any item that may need special equipment, disassembly or hoisting.
Ask Before Leaving Items in Dresser Drawers
Lightweight clothing may sometimes remain in certain drawers, but heavy, fragile or loose items should be removed. Ask your moving crew first because the safest approach depends on the construction and weight of the furniture.
Plan Apartment, Condo and Building Access
Reserve elevators, loading docks and moving windows when required. Ask building management about parking restrictions, certificates, loading zones, move hours and access rules before moving day.
Prepare Children and Pets
Moving crews carry furniture through open doors and active loading areas. Arrange a safe area for children and pets away from the carrying path whenever possible.
Consolidate Cleaning Supplies
If you are cleaning after the truck is loaded, keep a separate kit with the supplies you will need. Clean cabinets, closets, appliances and other areas ahead of time when possible, then handle the final vacuuming or wipe-down after rooms are emptied.
Do a Final Walk-Through
Check every room, closet, cabinet, drawer, basement, attic, garage, shed, patio and storage area before leaving. Look behind doors and inside appliances so nothing is accidentally left behind.
